List of films with synopsis



1) Battle of Bhima Koregaon (Dir: Somnath Waghmare; 49 min; India)


This documentary is about the 500 Mahar soldiers (the untouchables) who offered to fight alongside their countrymen, against the colonisers. Rejected by the ruling class they joined forces with the colonisers and fought in the 'Bhima Koregaon Battle', defeating the Brahminical rule of the Peshwas. Just as history did, so do the media and ruling class today conveniently forget to acknowledge them.


2) Amma (Dir: Neelan; 36 min; India)


Life and struggle of a 97 year old widow from Kerala; parents got her married first time when she was 14, became a widow soon, remarried a social reformer after 12 years, faced social isolation and poverty, bloomed into a political activist, became a widow again in 80. She lived a full life, and her life gives a glimpse of Kerala's political history.


3) Perungadal Vettathu (Dir: Arul Ezhilan; 60 min; India)


Fishermen who inhabit the southern most peripheries of India, were caught in cyclone Ockhi and were given up to die in sea without being rescued by the government. This documentary discusses those painful events, the tragic condition that followed of their families and the political reasons behind these deaths. This documentary also looks deeper into the havoc caused by cyclone Ockhi, the unspeakable tragedy that befallen on the fishermen community of Kanyakumari and the political reasons that prevented them from getting help.


4) Lock and Key (Dir: Shipi Gulati; 83 min; India)

Taala Te Kunjee, is a heart wrenching story of Five recovering addicts at The Hermitage Rehab, Amritsar, Punjab. This story beautifully captures the essence of recovery from addiction and how these recovered addicts along with their families are helping other sufferers recover from the rampant drug problem in the state. While they struggle to establish new relationships with their pasts, their wives strive to redefine the meaning of love. An intimate portrayal of recovery, 'Taala Te Kunjee' is about relationships and the labor of everyday.

5) India’s Forbidden Love (Dir: Sadhana Subramaniam; 25 min; India)


In March 2016, Kausalya and her husband Shankar were brutally attacked on a crowded street in southern India. Shankar, who came from a Dalit caste, died of his injuries. Kausalya survived and accused her parents of orchestrating an honour killing. In the film, she fights for justice through the courts, testifying against her parents in a trial where they face the death penalty. Kausalya’s now estranged grandparents and brother, Gautham, also await the verdict, desperately hoping Kausalya’s mother and father will be released. The unique access to both sides shows a family torn apart by a caste hierarchy that remains deeply-rooted in India's social fabric.


6) The Slave Genesis (Dir: Aneez K Mappila; 64 min; India)


The documentary ‘The Slave Genesis’ deals with the social transformation of Paniya tribals, who belong to South India’s hill district of Wayanad. ‘Paniya’ literally translates to ‘worker’.


7) Palai / Landscapes of Longing (Dir: Jayakrishnan Subramanian; 28 Min; India / Germany)


A modern metaphoric interpretation of classical Tamil poetry and artistic depiction of the desert landscape (Palai) in the Sangam literature in a cinematic form in the context of the current socio-political issue of South-Indian Tamil migrant workers in the Middle East.


8) Ladies and Gentlewomen (Dir: Malini Jeevarathnam; 46 min; India)


A film about love, life, and suicides among lesbians.


9) Sapnas (Dir: Bhavani G S; 5 min; India)


As a small child I used to run outside my house into the coffee drying yard to see the airplane which used to pass high above. I have used in this video the painting of my house and coffee estate in the remote place of Coorg, the spot or place where I used to watch the plane. Now travelling for my art residencies as an artist I have tried to juxtapose both my dreams into it.


10) Some Stories around Witches (Dir: Lipika Singh Darai; 44 min; India)




The film explores the politics of witch hunting - how superstition, greed, ignorance, fear, insecurity and power work together to cause immense violence and suffering.
